Reading Lately – February 2020

I did not read many books in February. Matter of fact…it was only two. I have no idea why that is/was. I felt like I was reading a lot, but no…I only finished TWO books. TWO! That is so not like me and not to mention that I was pretty stressed out with family stuff this month and that’s typically when I turn to books, so I am baffled…but oh well, it is what it is, right? Out of those two books, I did have a five-star read in my opinion…so let’s get to it.

The Identicals by Elin Hilderbrand

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Since I read The Winter Street trilogy over Decmeber and January and enjoyed them, I wanted to tackle another Elin Hilderbrand book and this one somewhat disappointed me, I’m sorry to say. I picked it because the premise sounded interesting to me….identical twin sisters that switch islands where they live…essentially “sort of” switch lives. I wanted to like it more than I did, but it just seemed to drag on and I never fully felt invested in any of the characters. Also, I felt like I could pretty much figure out what was going to end up happening. It was okay just not as good as I wanted it to be (And of course, Elin wrote it just for me to enjoy, right? Haha!!!).

The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I adored this book. I admit it started off a little slow for me and took me awhile to really get into it, but once I was in…I was all in! This was such a cute romantic comedy that tackled some hard issues while at the same time managed to keep the romantic comedy feel. The book is about two people who share a flat, but never see each other. One works days and the other works nights, but they start leaving little post-it type notes for one another, like reminders to take out the trash or we need more of this and gradually the notes get longer and more personal as time goes on. I’m sure we can all guess the “ending” of the book, but how everything plays out and the hard issues of the book is what keeps you wanting to read it. Even though this was more of a “light-hearted” read, the issues it dealt with in the book (i.e. emotional abuse, stalking) made me think about the book long after I had read it. I really enjoyed this book and am putting it on my list to reread sometime in the future for sure!
